Following a 15-month delay, the Broadway League and American Theatre Wing have announced a date for the 74^th annual Tony Awards. The celebration will take place on Sunday, Sept. 26 in a ceremony lasting four hours, spread across two separate televised events.

Audiences will learn the winners for a majority of the categories in a 7 p.m. ET presentation, streaming on Paramount+.

Then, a live concert, titled Broadway’s Back!, will follow at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Along with performances from Broadway favorites and the three current Best Musical contenders, the concert will feature the presentation of the night’s final three categories. They are: Best Play, Best Revival of a Play, and Best Musical.

Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin and American Theatre Wing President and CEO Heather Hitchens issued a joint statement: “There is nothing that compares to the magic of live theatre, and we are thrilled to be able to share its celebratory return and the incredible talent and artistry of the abbreviated 2019–2020 season with theatre fans everywhere.”

The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing initially schedule the 74^th annual Tony Awards for June 7, 2020. However, the organizers officially put the presentation on hold on March 25, a couple weeks after Broadway shut down due to the pandemic. Several months later, the organizers were optimistic that they’d be able to host a virtual ceremony last fall. But few details emerged, even when the nominees were revealed last October. As voting time approached, officials from the League and Wing altered their plans. Specifically, they aimed for a ceremony to take place in conjunction with Broadway’s re-opening. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Broadway League recently announced that Broadway will resume in September. Shows have announced their re-opening dates. During the Tony Award nominating process, the awards’ administration committee determined that productions that opened by Feb. 19, 2020 were eligible for awards. Of the contenders, the Alanis Morissette jukebox musical Jagged Little Pill leads the group with 15 nominations. In the plays category, Jeremy O. Harris’ Slave Play made history with 12 nominations.
