A 1950s musical version of “Romeo and Juliet” with different character names,  an old-time favorite comedy from the witty pen of Neil Simon, a Tennessee Williams classic drama and a musical celebrating the 1980s make up the 2015 Huron Playhouse season.

The season will open July 7 with “West Side Story,” set in New York City and pitting two gangs, one American, one Puerto Rican, against each other. When one of the American gang members falls for the sister of the opposing gang, the events lead up to tragedy. “West Side Story,” which transports Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” to 1950s New York City, runs July 7-10.

The season will continue July 14 with Simon’s “The Odd Couple,” about two divorced men in New York City, who couldn’t be more different. One, Felix Ungar, is compulsive, neat, tense and a bit of a hypochondriac. The other, Oscar Madison, is slovenly, happy-go-lucky, messy and carefree. When Ungar moves in with Madison, the wry one-liners fly…and Madison’s life is upended. “The Odd Couple” runs July 14-18.

Next up is “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” a steamy drama by Tennessee Williams about a southern family gathering at a birthday celebration for the patriarch, who doesn’t know he’s dying of cancer. As family members fight for their portion of the estate, tensions mount and troubled relationships lead to a turbulent climax, with secrets revealed. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” opens July 21 and concludes July 24.

The season concludes with “Footloose,” centering on the shake up of a conservative town. “Footloose” runs July 28 and concludes July 31.

“After considerable analysis of historic attendance data, show requests by audience members and actual cost of production, the decision has been made to offer in 2015 the four outstanding shows shown above, with performances running Tuesday through Friday evenings,” Playhouse staff said in a prepared statement. “Just as change is something we all experience in our lives, The Huron Playhouse has had to adjust to the financial realities of being an independent, not-for-profit theatre, which is no longer financed by Bowling Green State University.

“One thing has NOT changed! The mission of The Huron Playhouse is to educate and enlighten youth and adults about all aspects of theatre performance and production and to entertain the residents of and visitors to our community. We hope you share our excitement and we look forward to your continued attendance and support as we enter our 67th season of outstanding entertainment.”

Unlike previous years, shows will run Tuesday through Friday, instead of Saturday.

“Please know that losing a Saturday evening performance and moving to a four-show schedule was not easy; however, we hope you will understand that this adjustment was entirely necessary to sustaining operations. The board has committed itself to accommodate our Saturday season pass holders as much as possible, and we ask for your appreciation of our efforts to hold down costs while maintaining the high quality that has always been expected of The Playhouse,” the statement reads.

Curtain time for each show is 8 p.m. The price of the season subscription will remain the same ($80) and adult tickets will cost $22, senior tickets $20 and student tickets $18.
