And the winner is — Webster’s Bitch.

More specifically, it is the winning short play in Miami-based City Theatre’s annual National Short Playwrighting Contest. City Theatre staff chose Webster’s Bitch, and 24 finalists, from more than 750 writers.

“The list comprises playwrights new to the company, alongside several writers who are previously produced at City Theatre,” the company’s staff said in a prepared statement. “It is a wonderful ensemble of dramatists who offer an exciting variety of lively plays that represent the nimble, provocative, and entertaining facets of this unique genre.”

And now, you can experience Webster’s Bitch and the finalists through a free livestreaming virtual reading series. Episodes are taking place at 7 p.m. each Thursday through Dec. 17. Watch them on City Theatre’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/CityTheatreMiami, and YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHTy4iB8HVeiIEEsu0fPlUA.

City Theatre is the nation’s only theater company producing ten-minute plays and musicals year-round and for all ages. Productions and programs include various “Shorts” series. For instance, She Shorts presents LGBTQ short pieces by regional and national playwrights. In fact, South Florida audiences last saw Webster’s Bitch at the inaugural She Shorts during the summer of 2019. The National New Play Network’s New Play Exchange website describes the play, by Jacqueline Bircher, as follows: “When their Editor-in-Chief gets caught using some rather colorful profanity, the employees of Webster’s dictionary find themselves at the center of a Twitter uprising over gender, obscenity, and the future of the English language itself.

Audiences will be able to see Webster’s Bitch as part of the final episode of the virtual reading series. It will take place at 7 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 17. Here is the upcoming schedule for the virtual series.
