New City Players (NCP) will feature top works by South Florida playwrights in an upcoming event titled Short Plays: Lauder Made.
NCP has scheduled the festival for 8 p.m. Sept. 27 and 28, as well as 3 p.m. on the 28th. The venue will be the theatrical space at General Provision Downtown, 300 SW 1st Ave. Suite 155 in Ft. Lauderdale.
“This eclectic 75 minutes of live theater will feature five of the best new short plays by South Florida playwrights while crafting a fascinating through line of Ft. Lauderdale history,” reads an NCP press release. “This project is for anyone who wants to celebrate the creativity, diversity, and history of our greater Ft. Lauderdale community.”
NCP is a not-for-profit, ensemble-based, professional theater company based in Ft. Lauderdale. Its mission is to create community through transformative theater.
Those attending will experience short plays by Mairi Chanel, Randy Coleman, Denzel McCausland, Joel Rodriguez, Sarah Romeo, Randall Swinton, and Krystal Millie Valdes.
The actors who will perform are Mairi Chanel, Randy Coleman, Denzel McCausland, Joel Rodriguez, Sarah Romeo, Randall Swinton, and Krystal Millie Valdes.
NCP Producing Artistic Director Tim Davis says the play selection process was two-fold. First, Valdes, director of the NCPLab, selected 20 of her favorite works from a total of about 70 short plays. From the 20 mini plays, Davis and long-time lab attendee and playwright Christopher Narconicola narrowed it further down to five locally-crafted short plays.
Davis says he hopes Short Plays: Lauder Made will become an annual event. We “are hoping to elevate and expand this project as a way to keep investing in local playwrights,” Davis adds.
